Travel & Occupational Safety Awareness Training

Type of Training

Tundra provides safety awareness training for people who are visiting, living or working in unfamiliar areas. Our courses and programs are suitable for journalists, international development workers, defence contractors, and all other types of organization that may be required to send their staff internationally. We are the most experienced and best-resourced provider of this type of training in Canada, with a client list that includes well-known and respected organizations in sectors that include media, development, retail, engineering, and the extractive industries.

We provide developed solutions according to our customer’s available time, budgets and potential exposure, ranging from general travel safety awareness seminars through to our renown onsite hostile environment training experiences, which have consistently been rated by our attendees as the being the best that they have attended anywhere.

Security and travel safety awareness training has become a mandatory prerequisite for many international and public sector organizations that are required to send their staff into areas that may potentially present safety and security risks; and in fact safety awareness training is increasingly thought to add value when staff are required to travel to unfamiliar locations that may not necessarily be thought of as traditionally higher risk destinations.

Many organizations have come to see this as part of their foundational duty of care obligations, but it is also a way of reducing insurance premiums, reducing litigation risks; and if delivered effectively it will teach key knowledge and skills that will improve the comfort and resilience of staff working internationally and their work  performance.

Hostile Environment Awareness Training / Safety Awareness in Foreign Environments

Our HEAT and SAFE courses introduce or refresh the skills and knowledge needed to reduce the chances of our trainees being involved in a security or safety event while travelling, and to mitigate the seriousness and effects of an incident if they are.

Tundra’s core HEAT program is a five-day residential experience which is typically then modified according to the specific geographical areas where delegates are due to travel, and for the functions they are likely to perform. This course blends theoretical and scenario-based practical training which includes the use of simulation firearms, hyper-reaslistic medical training aids, role players, and a multi-surface driver training facility.

For those that feel that a full hostile environment course is excessive for their travel safety exposure we offer a range of supporting options that including shorter refresher HEAT courses, Safety in Awareness in Foreign Environments (SAFE) training options, and standalone seminars and exercises. We can provide these using mobile instructor teams for those unable to attend our facility.

Our HEAT / SAFE programs are also complemented by other company services including travel security, information support and physical protection services, for organizations that may require them.

Higher Risk Worker Safety

HRWS addresses the requirement to train personnel who are at higher risk of violent attack, medical injuries and environmental and other hazards due to working alone, working in remote areas and working with limited communications and support.

High Risk Workers can include journalists covering stories in remote areas, personnel working on remote mining sites and personnel that work outside of normal emergency services response jurisdictions such as oil and gas workers, surveyors, rural law enforcement officers and aid workers.

HRWS is a two-day to three-day course that focuses on proactive solutions for high risk workers, such as critical decision making, risk management, journey management and planning and reactive tools such as conflict resolution, tactical communication skills and remote medicine.
